Chapter 12

“Quick, we need to shut it!” Rhina yelled. Alisha spun to help, and between them they slammed the heavy door with a thump. Rhina turned the large key in the lock. “The bar,” she cried, reaching for a slab of wood that lay across the floor near the entrance. “I’m pregnant, Alisha, and I can’t manage it all on my own!”

She clasped one end, while Alisha lifted the other. It was quite bulky, but the two of them managed to lift it high and maneuver it into the grooves channeled into the rock on either side of the doorjamb. The entrance was now solidly barricaded. Alisha turned and rested against the door, her legs like jelly.

“I’m sorry, I’m sorry, I couldn’t lift it!” For the first time Alisha noticed Betty. Rhina moved to embrace her distraught grandmother. Alisha could only stare at them. Trembling violently with shock, she was unable to process what was happening.

Violent thumping at the door jarred her and shocked her out of her stupor. She leapt away from it in fright.

“It’s okay, Grandma. The solid wood will hold. Alisha, come here and help me get Grandma into the other room,” Rhina said.

Alisha cast a fearful glance at the shuddering door, and terror gripped her, freezing her in place.

“Alisha!” Rhina snapped.

Turning to the sound of her name, Rhina grasped her by the arm, pulling her in for a quick hug. Releasing her, Rhina gestured toward another room which Alisha, in her fear, hadn’t noticed. “Come on,” Rhina said. “Snap out of it and help me. We’ll all be much safer in there with a second barricaded door.”

Alisha nodded. Safer sounded good—very good.

They each took a position on either side of Betty, and half-carried her into the cave kitchen. Rhina coaxed them along. “It’s okay, Granny, we’ll be safer once we’re in there. Just relax and try not to worry.” Her words of encouragement seemed to help the elderly woman. Once inside, there was another solid door to lock and barricade behind them. They barely managed between the two of them. The dreadful howls and screams from the tunnel were muted, but they still turned Alisha’s blood cold.

Betty slumped into a rocking chair, sobbing. “I couldn’t move the bar on my own. I was so worried you’d be hurt or killed and it would be my fault because I couldn’t lift that heavy bar to let you in!” Alisha crouched down and slipped an arm about her. Unable to speak, she clung to the older woman, gaining comfort as well as offering it. Rhina disappeared further into the cave but Alisha stayed where she was with Betty. The elderly woman wrapped her hands around her wrist, holding on in a vise-like grip.

Alisha watched silently as Rhina coaxed her grandmother to drink from a tumbler she’d fetched from a cupboard and filled with water at the kitchen sink.

The loud klaxon horn which had blared a warning sounded again. Betty yelped in fear, spilling water over Rhina.

“Hush, it’s okay,” Rhina reassured them both.
